Within the framework of the RESET project - Development of a Conceptual Framework for SME Resilience Using Effectuation Theory, funded by the Croatian Science Foundation and led by Prof. Dr. sc. Nataša Šarlija, an interactive workshop “Doughnut Economics as a Tool for Teaching and Reflecting on Sustainability” was held on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at the Faculty of Economics of Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek. The workshop was conducted by Professors Dr. Lucia Walsh and Dr. Olivia Freeman from Technological University Dublin.
The workshop was dedicated to new approaches to teaching topics of sustainability, social challenges, and complex problems, and it offered a different, highly engaging format of work – it included movement, work in space, and joint reflection, with the aim of deepening the understanding of the relationship between the economy, society, and the environment. Around twenty scientists and associates from the Faculty of Economics, as well as from other constituent parts of Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek, and international guests participated in the workshop, which was extremely beneficial given the interdisciplinary context of sustainability. Through practical experience, participants became acquainted with the concept Doughnut Economics as a framework for thinking about sustainable development, they gained concrete ideas on how to integrate these themes into their own teaching and tried out methods that encourage active student engagement in working on complex problems.
In an era of pronounced climatic, social, and economic changes, through this dynamic and stimulating experience that goes beyond the classic lecture framework, the Faculty of Economics in Osijek is actively opening up space for reflection on sustainability and its role in shaping a more responsible future.
