Research Study of European-Chinese Literary Festival

Abstract

According to Wilson et al. (2017), festivals are events that: take place at a specific time, are regularly repeated at intervals, and are aimed at visitors. Festivals differ from special events in terms of the nature of their regular holding. Festivals are pre-planned events and provide an opportunity for networking, discussion, presentation of projects/products/services, but also for popularizing the theme of the festival with the possibility of social, societal, and cultural interaction between stakeholders present at the festival. Festival stakeholders can be viewed through several groups: organizers, participants (exhibitors), visitors, sponsors, volunteers, policy makers, media, and the public.

The research focus of this project is reflected in the analysis of two international festivals organized by the delegation of the European Union in China: EU-China International Literary Festival. In accordance with the goals of the Festival, five waves of data collection have been conducted so far, in which the views of three groups of respondents were collected (two groups of authors – domestic and international, and visitors). In the second project year, the results of the fourth and fifth waves of research are analyzed, and statistical analyses are used to compare data from all five waves. The goal of the project is to compare and determine differences and similarities both between the observed groups of respondents (three groups) and between the five waves (data collection for the Festival). The project contributes to increasing the number of tested research instruments suitable for monitoring the views of festival stakeholders' satisfaction. A special contribution is made by standardizing the methodology for conducting festival research and determining common dimensions as well as specific dimensions depending on the sector of the creative industry that the analyzed festival promotes (for example, literary, communication, film, and other festivals from individual sectors of the creative industry).

Abstract

According to Wilson et al. (2017) Festivals are events held at a particular point in time, repeated in a regular manner and are open to the public. Festivals differ from special events as they occur on a regular basis, whereas 'a special event is a one-time or infrequently occurring event outside the normal range/program or activities of the sponsoring or organizing body' (Getz 1997). Festivals are a pre-planned event and provide an opportunity for networking, discussion, presentation of projects/products/services, but also popularization of festival themes with the possibility of social and cultural interaction between stakeholders present at the festival. Festival stakeholders can be observed through several groups: organizers, participants (exhibitors), visitors, sponsors, volunteers, policy makers, media and the general public.

This project focuses on an analysis of the four Festivals organized by the Delegation of the European Union to China: EU-China International Literary Festival. The goal of the project is to compare and identify similarities and differences among the three groups of respondents (the data was collected at four time points). The project will contribute to the filed by increasing the number of tested research instruments that are adequate for determining the attitudes and satisfaction of festival stakeholders. Additionally, project contribution is reflected in harmonization of methodology in festival research and in identifying common dimensions as well as specific dimensions depending on the creative industry sector promoted by the festival in focus (for instance, literary, communication, film, and other festivals from particular sectors of the creative industry).
