Science Meets Business
SCIENCE MEETS BUSINESS

Science Meets Business is an event that, in cooperation with the Croatian Employers' Association (CEA), has been organized at the Faculty of Economics and Business in Osijek since 2014.

The aim of these events is to connect theory and practice, encourage open dialogue and cooperation between the academic community, the business sector and decision-makers at the local, regional and national level. Through the exchange of knowledge, experiences and ideas, Science Meets Business contributes to the improvement of business practices, enrichment of the teaching process and, indirectly, strengthening the competitiveness of the Croatian economy. The event brings together eminent experts, entrepreneurs, scientists and students, creating a platform for networking, joint projects and professional development.

7th Science Meets Business entitled:

CAREER DEVELOPMENT THROUGH LIFELONG LEARNING

The aim of this event was to emphasize the importance of lifelong learning as a key success factor in the contemporary, rapidly changing society and business environment. Through an introductory presentation and two panels, participants had the opportunity to become aware of how the continuous adoption of new knowledge and skills contributes to professional development, strengthening competitiveness in the labour market and better adaptation to technological and social changes. The event also highlighted the broader value of lifelong learning in fostering critical thinking, creativity and personal growth, contributing not only to career success but also to the quality of private life. Ultimately, participants were encouraged to further invest in their own education as a foundation for long-term stability and development.

Introductory presentation: Employee Development as a Basis for Competitiveness: Lifelong Learning in Practice

The keynote speaker was Mr. Aleksandar Zemunić, Managing Partner at Selectio, who gave an overview of the key skills and knowledge that are in demand in the modern labour market through an introductory presentation.

6th Science Meets Business entitled:

LABOUR MARKET AND POST-PANDEMIC RECOVERY: RESTRUCTURING, FLEXIBILITY, RESILIENCE?

The aim of the meeting was to stimulate discussion on the key problems of the Croatian labour market, the issue of structural unemployment and its long-term consequences, and measures that can result in an improvement in the labour market in the short and long term, from the position of supply, but also demand. In addition, answers were offered to questions related to the issue of causes and consequences of the omnipresent gap between the business and academic community and the key challenges of the career management system, and the views of experienced entrepreneurs and career counselors and young entrepreneurs on the state of the Croatian labour market and access to education were presented.

5th Science Meets Business entitled:

LABOUR MARKET ISSUES

Objective of the 5th Meeting of Science and Economy was to encourage a constructive discussion on the key challenges and opportunities of the Croatian labour market. Through the panel discussion, participants dealt with the issue of structural unemployment and its long-term consequences, analyzed measures that can contribute to the improvement of the labour market from the perspective of supply and demand, and discussed the causes and consequences of the gap between the academic and business sectors. Special emphasis is placed on the challenges of the career management system, as well as on the different views – of experienced entrepreneurs, career counsellors and young entrepreneurs – on education and employment in Croatia. The event, ultimately, opened up space for reflection on possible directions of future action and cooperation between science and the economy.

3rd Science Meets Business entitled:

CHALLENGES OF YOUNG PEOPLE IN THE LABOUR MARKET – A VISION OF SLAVONIA, BARANJA AND SRIJEM

This meeting was prompted by efforts to connect the academic and business community even more strongly so that, by discussing current economic issues, exchanging experiences and knowledge, we could build foundations that will, ultimately, contribute to the overall development of the Region. The topic of the panel "Challenges of young people in the labour market - a vision of Slavonia, Baranja and Srijem" singled out the key problems of the labour market and warned of the current gap between the expectations of young generations of students and the needs of employers. Ultimately, the goal of these meetings was to encourage reflections on possible directions of future activities of students, people who will be looking for their first job tomorrow, but also employers.

Panel: Challenges of the labour market of Slavonia and Baranja and the perspectives of "new" generations of students

The panel seeks to single out the key problems of the labour market and warn of the problems of differences in the expectations of young generations of students and the real needs of employers. One of the most pressing problems in the Republic of Croatia is youth unemployment, which is among the highest in the European Union (43.1%).

1st Science Meets Business entitled:

SCIENCE AND BUSINESS – THE PATH TO A SECURE FUTURE

This meeting was prompted by efforts to connect the academic and business community even more strongly so that, by discussing current economic issues, exchanging experiences and knowledge, we could build foundations that will, ultimately, contribute to the overall development of the Region. The meeting was attended by numerous employers who are participants in the first joint project – voluntary student internships, students who attended student internships, as well as the organizers of the entire event. In the first part of the meeting, basic information and thoughts on the cooperation between these two institutions were presented, while the second part of the meeting, through two panel discussions, presented numerous thoughts on current economic issues and noticeable changes coming from the environment.

It included a discussion about the causes and consequences of the omnipresent large gap between the business and academic community, problems in the labour market and, ultimately, stimulated reflections on possible directions for future action.
