The aim of the course is to introduce students to the concept and role of controlling, taking into account the need to coordinate organizational functions. Students will acquire knowledge to assess the financial position of an organization through the calculation of financial statement analysis indicators. The course will train students to apply operational controlling instruments with the aim of preparing the optimal amount of information in order to increase the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the company.
1. Introduction to controlling: Conceptual definition of controlling and controller. The role, functions and tasks of controlling. Operational and strategic controlling. Specificities of controlling in the public sector and non-profit organizations.
2. Controlling as a support to management: The connection between controlling and other organizational functions. Controlling and the planning and control system.
3. Business performance management: Horizontal and vertical analysis of financial statements. Ratio analysis. Du Pont indicator system. ADT indicator system.
4. Instruments and methods of operational controlling: Cost-volume-profit analysis. Standard costs. The role of budgeting in planning and control. Preparation of the operational budget. Preparation of the financial budget. Static and flexible budget
1. critically evaluate and explain the role and importance of controlling as a managerial function of the organization,
2. review the connection between controlling and other managerial functions, with an emphasis on the planning function,
3. assess the financial position of the organization through the calculation and interpretation of selected indicators of financial statement analysis, 4. propose the application of operational controlling instruments on a specific example of an organization and discuss the results of the analysis with arguments,
5. draw conclusions about business operations based on the previously prepared operational and financial budget
