The goal of the course is to refresh and acquire new knowledge and skills of oral and written communication in the field of German for business. To train students to work independently on professional texts in German, which implies knowledge of the structure of a professional text, an approach to understanding the text (reading strategies: global reading and selective reading). To become familiar with grammatical structures typical of the language of business and with business terminology. To develop speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in German for business with an emphasis on communication competences and skills in presenting professional content in German.
The course refines and expands knowledge and skills from previous semesters, and its content is linked to other courses in the study programme. Outline topics in the third semester include marketing and promotion. Students read and interpret specialist texts in the foreign language, purposefully learn specialist vocabulary related to the outline topics, and revise grammatical and lexical structures typical of Business German, with an emphasis on competing forms of the passive voice and the significant use of extended participles as attributes in the specialist language.
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
1. define basic business terms, collocations and idioms in German and apply them in a given context,
2. understand texts on business topics, identify key ideas and find specific information,
3. use grammatical structures characteristic of level B1 of business German,
4. achieve independent oral communication typical of general business situations.
