Business English 6

Goal

The aim of this course is to build on the acquired knowledge of business English (minimum level B1+/B2 according to CEFR – Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) with terminology from the field of business and the acquisition of language skills related to understanding business concepts and global business trends. Furthermore, the course systematizes higher-level grammatical structures typical of business English, which enables successful business oral and written communication in English in modern business environments. Reading professional texts at the upper intermediate level systematically develops and trains receptive skills, while current video and audio materials train comprehension, evaluation of what is read and expression of critical thinking on selected topics. Ultimately, the aim of the course is to make students aware of the importance of continuously improving their own language knowledge for the needs of their own business development and to encourage them to self-study and lifelong improvement of business English.

  • Job satisfaction (defining and finding synonyms related to the terminology of job satisfaction and employee motivation and factors that influence business success and satisfaction; analyzing and understanding a professional source text about the characteristics of the most desirable companies to work for; practicing telephone sales skills; analyzing a case study about a software company and the importance of employee relationships, and formulating in writing the determinants important for interpersonal relationships in a company; practicing the structure of liabilities)
  • Risk (defining terms related to risky business and the risks that companies face, actively listening to experts about external and internal risk factors, and understanding a read professional text about the risks and challenges of internationalization; repeating the structure of adverbs as parts of speech and their gradation, developing intercultural competences through understanding a text about the business culture of new markets)
  • Management styles (defining key management concepts through contrasting management styles and vocabulary structures formed by prefixes; understanding video interviews with management and organizational behavior experts; reviewing and adopting basic structures related to successful presentations in a business context)
  • Team building (defining terminology related to the advantages and disadvantages of teamwork through repetition of prefixes and antonyms; video-interview with an expert in team building, and understanding by reading about effective team building while solving conflict situations, etc.; learning the structure of the perfect form of modal verbs)
