Business English 5

Goal

The aim of the course is to refresh and acquire new knowledge and skills in oral and written communication in the field of business English in contemporary business environments and to acquire language skills related to understanding basic business concepts and global business trends. Furthermore, the course systematizes grammatical structures typical of business English and systematically develops and practices receptive skills (reading intermediate-level professional texts, active listening and comprehension) and productive skills (speaking, discussing audio and video materials; writing basic business formats). The aim of the course is also to apply critical thinking skills when evaluating authentic materials in the English language, as well as to raise students' awareness of the importance of improving their own language knowledge and to encourage students to build key 21st century skills (such as information literacy, global awareness, analysis of real-life data and information graphics).

  • Communication (defining the characteristics of successful communicators and effective business communication, understanding an interview with a communication expert and the impact of technology on today's communication, understanding a professional source text on the advantages and disadvantages of communication via e-mail, acquiring idiomatic business expressions related to communication, participating in a telephone conversation with aggravating elements present, analyzing a case on the cost of success, and practicing the skill of writing concise decisions based on teamwork)
  • International marketing (defining marketing collocations, understanding professional source text and interviews on topics related to marketing strategies, and the requirements for acquiring a qualification in international marketing through formal education, practicing group brainstorming activities during a business meeting, as well as minute-writing skills with a case analysis of creating a global brand)
  • Building relationships (defining key terms and collocations related to establishing and terminating business relationships, understanding interviews on the topic of establishing business relationships, reading professional original text on international business relations, developing communication skills in situations of establishing contacts, getting to know each other and expressing interest, case analysis of establishing customer loyalty to a hotel chain accompanied by writing a professional sales letter, and developing intercultural competencies on the topic of international business)
  • Success (defining terminology related to indicators of business success, and vocabulary based on common prefixes in the English language, characteristics of successful business, and reading about biographical profiles of the world's most successful entrepreneurs, practicing negotiation skills through three key negotiation skills by analyzing the case of an English football club while writing a press release, and reviewing and repeating language structures for recounting past and present events)
