Business English 1

Goal

The aim of this course is to build on the acquired knowledge of general English (minimum level B1 according to CEFR – Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) with basic business terminology in English and to acquire language skills related to understanding basic business concepts and global business trends, and accordingly to create a foundation for business oral and written communication in English in modern business environments. Furthermore, the course systematizes grammatical structures typical of business English and systematically develops and practices receptive skills (reading intermediate-level professional texts, active listening and comprehension) and productive skills (speaking, discussing audio and video materials; writing basic business formats). The ultimate goal is to make students aware of the importance of improving their own language knowledge and to encourage them to self-study and lifelong learning/improvement of business English.

The course repeats, builds on, and systematizes grammatical structures (verb tenses, noun combinations) necessary for effective oral and written communication about basic business concepts, as well as for understanding professional texts on business topics. Through exercises, students work intensively on acquiring business vocabulary, individual words, and language structures in English, and systematically practice all four language skills.

  •  Brands (defining basic terms, adopting marketing collocations, understanding business text related to branding, acquiring oral communication skills in the context of business meetings)
  •  Travel (defining basic terms, understanding the basic differences between British and American terminology related to tourism, understanding business text related to business travel, acquiring the basics of business telephone skills)
  •  Change (defining basic terms, acquiring vocabulary related to describing trends and changes, understanding business text related to organizational changes, acquiring the basics of communication during business meetings)
  •  Organization (defining basic terms, describing the status of a company, discussing the structure and status of employees in companies, understanding business text related to companies and successful business)
