Economics and business economics

The Faculty of Economics in Osijek is one of the oldest higher education institutions in Osijek and the entire Slavonia and Baranja region, and was the backbone of the establishment of the Josip Juraj Strossmayer University in Osijek. It was founded in 1961, as a continuation of the activities of the Center for Economic Studies of the University of Zagreb, with great support from the business community, the Chamber of Commerce, and local and regional government institutions. 

This "regional" foundation has determined the profile of the Faculty from the very beginning: in scientific and research work, focusing on the problems of regional development, entrepreneurship and business development, and in educational programs focused on the management and development of businesses, in all functions and aspects, and on the issues of entrepreneurship (starting entrepreneurial ventures, but also the development of enterprising individuals). 

By developing and launching a unique university undergraduate study program in Economics and Business Economics (which was launched according to a new program from the academic year 2021/2022), The Faculty strives to follow educational trends in the world, respond to the dynamics of the times we live in, and provide students with competencies for personal and professional development with the aim of strengthening their employability.

Upon completion of a university undergraduate degree, a student can continue their education at a university graduate degree program. Business economics choosing one of the following directions: Financial Management, Marketing, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Management, Business Informatics, Supply Chain Management or can enroll in graduate studies Applied economics. We have changed our graduate studies in accordance with the trends and demands of the labor market, and starting next year, students will enroll in studies according to the new program.

  • Structure and ECTS credits: 180 ECTS credits (154 ECTS required courses, 20 ECTS electives and 6 ECTS final thesis)
  • Language: Croatian language, with the possibility of conducting courses in English

Registration requirements

University undergraduate studies at the Faculty of Economics in Osijek can be enrolled by persons who have completed a four-year secondary school and have passed the state matura exam, which is evaluated compulsory B level subjects (Croatian language, mathematics and a foreign language). 

In addition to the above subjects, the same role in admission to the Faculty of Economics is played by: grade point average obtained after graduating from high school. The components of the state matriculation exam are eliminatory, which means that if the candidate does not achieve the minimum percentage for a particular subject, he will not be on the list for admission to the Faculty of Economics in Osijek.

  • The component - special achievements (average high school grades) is not eliminative - if the candidate has a lower average grade than 3.5, he will have 0 points on this component, but he will be on the ranking list for admission to the Faculty of Economics in Osijek. The required number of points for enrollment can be compensated by the points achieved at the state matriculation exam. 
  • Full-time students are those who study according to a program based on a full teaching schedule (full-time). 
  • Part-time students are those who attend an educational program in addition to work or other activities that require specially adapted terms and methods of conducting studies in accordance with the curriculum. The costs of such studies are fully borne by the student. The decision on the amount of tuition fees is made by the University Senate.

Study structure

Teaching at the undergraduate university study program Economics and Business Economics at the Faculty of Economics in Osijek is conducted over 6 semesters and consists of a total of 38 mandatory courses worth 154 ECTS credits, 20 ECTS credits of electives, and a final thesis worth 6 ECTS credits. 

Students can complete elective obligations in the amount of a minimum of 20 ECTS credits (a combination of all the above methods is possible, provided that a minimum of 20 ECTS credits are achieved) through:

  • elective courses from the list of courses offered
  • who are part of this program
  • university elective courses
  • completing professional practice with a workload of 5 ECTS credits
  • recognition of a piece or all ECTS credits based on a student's
  • exchanges (within the university, nationally or internationally)

After completing undergraduate studies, a student can continue their education at university graduate studies at the Faculty of Economics in Osijek choosing one of the majors depending on the student's developed affinities.
