Introduction

The goal of the studies is the development of responsible and independent (young) people with a developed business and economic way of thinking and leadership skills ready to face the challenges of the development of society and economy in a global environment. The study aims to develop an appropriate ratio of theoretical and practical knowledge in applied economics, through a combination of an interdisciplinary approach, active learning and targeted personal development, which enables the development of student skills, knowledge and competencies, necessary to become successful business leaders of tomorrow. The graduate university course in Applied Economics, in addition to the common learning outcomes of all graduate studies conducted at the Faculty of Economics and Business in Osijek, also develops specific learning outcomes, focused on the development of specific knowledge and skills related to the field of applied economics. Special attention in the design of the graduate university study in Applied Economics is given to the development of transversal skills of students, such as teamwork skills, digital skills, communication skills, etc., which are highlighted as what employers are most looking for from their future employees. Upon completion of the graduate university study in Applied Economics, the student will be ready to work in the public, private and civil sectors, for-profit and non-profit sectors, and in various activities, in numerous and different workplaces, which correspond to the learning outcomes of this study.

According to the learning outcomes, upon completion of the university graduate study in Applied Economics, the student will be able to:  

  • discuss in an informed manner economic concepts, development processes and economic challenges faced by contemporary society and the economy, 
  • evaluate public/economic policies, changes in the environment and their impact on development and economic decision-making, 
  • integrate knowledge about quantitative and qualitative methods, key development factors, management of organizations and a specific area in order to make concrete economic decisions, 
  • present strategic, financial and investment decisions that lead to the realization of set goals, 
  • develop the necessary digital competencies to successfully overcome challenges in a global environment. 

Teaching at the study is conducted over 4 semesters. The distribution of ECTS credits is indicated below:  

  • 30 ECTS credits are acquired in six compulsory courses that are offered in graduate studies at the Faculty that have a common content and cover the areas of managerial economics, research methods, leadership, project management, controlling and strategic management. With these courses, most of the common learning outcomes of all graduate studies are achieved.
  • 90 ECTS are distributed across semesters in the following way:
  • In the first semester:
  • 15 ECTS credits are acquired through the common content in all graduate courses at the Faculty (three courses) in the field of managerial economics, research methods and leadership.
  • 15 ECTS credits are distributed among the compulsory courses of the study.
  • In the second semester:
  • 10 ECTS credits are acquired through the common content in all graduate studies (two courses) in the field of project management and controlling.
  • 20 ECTS credits are distributed among the compulsory courses of the study.
  • In the third semester: 
  • 5 ECTS credits are acquired through the common content in all graduate studies (one course) in the field of strategic management.
  • 25 ECTS credits are distributed among the study content, namely:
  • 10 ECTS credits for compulsory study content. 
  • 15 ECTS credits  for elective study subjects. 
  • In the fourth semester
  • 15 ECTS credits are acquired through the diploma thesis
  • 15 ECTS credits are distributed to the study content, which can be completed in one of the following ways or in a combination of the following ways:
  • through elective courses 
  • through university elective courses (only if the schedule permits it) 
  • through courses from the ERASMUS+ mobility program or other types of mobility programs at other universities in accordance with the student’s approved study plan.
