The Atrium of the Sciences
A Memorial to Osijek Scientists and Nobel Prize Winners Marking the 200th Anniversary of the Birth of Josip Juraj Strossmayer
The Atrium of the Sciences is dedicated to Josip Juraj Strossmayer, Lavoslav Ružička and Vladimir Prelog – three renowned scientists who spent their youthful days in Osijek. All three received their basic education in Osijek, which is referred to in their biographies as the city in which the spark of excellence was ignited that led to their achievements in maturity. This has been confirmed by the fact that Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer is the founder of today’s Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and that Lavoslav Ružička and Vladimir Prelog were awarded the Nobel Prize for their contributions in organic chemistry.
In addition to Josip Juraj Strossmayer, Lavoslav Ružička and Vladimir Prelog, the Atrium of Sciences is also dedicated to Osijek teachers – Krunoslav Babić and Ivan Kurija. They both influenced the future Nobel Prize winners who decided on their calling in life due to their inclinations during their secondary education. The biographies of Josip Juraj Strossmayer, Lavoslav Ružička and Vladimir Prelog testify to the connection between education and contributions in the sciences and arts, as well as the impact of cultural patterns on scientific and artistic achievements of a city.
